The Newcastle Northtars have a long history, originally playing out of Newcastle’s original ice rink in Wharf Road until its closure in 1982.
With the opening of Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in 2000, the Northstars had a new home and entered the Australian Ice Hockey League competition in 2002.

The Northstars are the most successful team in the AIHL, contesting 14 of 21 AIHL finals series, and winning the Goodall Cup championship a league record 6 times.


In 2022, the Northstars celebrated their 20th year in the AIHL.


The six-time national champions the Newcastle Northstars play their home games here at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium.
